JG Craig Competition Under 15

Balwyn Cricket Club extends an invitation to any young cricketer to attend our special J.G. Craig Shield (formerly R.M. Hatch) training sessions and vie for selection in the final Balwyn Cricket Club J.G. Craig Shield Squad.

J.G. Craig Shield is a high standard prestigious competition conducted by the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association in the month of January for cricketers at the Under 15 level.

It is an invaluable learning experience for a young cricketer to play in this competition on turf pitches at the grounds used by 1st XI teams of the Sub-District competition.

All 28 Sub-District teams field a side and some of the best cricketers in the metropolitan area and also some from country areas participate.

Eligibility

Players must be under the age of 15 years at 1st September.

Our Aims

First and foremost we want the players to enjoy playing in the J.G. Craig Shield Competition. We want them to learn from the experience and improve their cricket skills. We would like them to be part of a competitive team. Whilst it is good experience for the players to play in a winning team, winning matches at all costs is not our objective. We would like players to play the game in a proper spirit of sportsmanship and to enjoy themselves in the process.

What We Offer

Balwyn Cricket Club has excellent training (turf and synthetic practice pitches) and match facilities. We offer sensible, intelligent and supportive coaching from experienced and qualified coaches and senior players. Transport to and from games can be arranged and all reasonable endeavors will be made to minimise disruption to family holidays. Our aim is to give every player a "fair go" and a chance to perform. However, we will not pursue this to extremes to the detriment of the more talented players.

Ability

All players, irrespective of ability, are welcome to attend training. However, all should be aware that J.G. Craig Shield is a high standard competition and the final squad will be selected on ability. The standard of the squad can vary considerably from year to year. We suggest young players, if they are in doubt, attend training and judge for themselves whether their skill levels are comparable to those of other players at the training sessions.

Safety

All batsmen and wicket keepers must wear helmets both in practice and in matches. In addition fielding restrictions apply: no fieldsmen other than those in the slips cordon may field within 11 yards (just over 10 metres) of the batsmen.
