We're into the Craig Shield Final
Date of Event Balwyn Cricket Club: Sat Jan 25, 2020 2:35AM

Greetings all,

Just over 2 weeks ago, the Craig Shield kicked off with 28 teams, approximately 420 under 15 cricketers, across 4 regions competing for the chance to play off for the VSDCA J.G. Craig Shield.

Following some frustrating weather and smoke disruptions during the first week, the boys kicked into gear during week 2 and combined to play some really good cricket to defeat Box Hill, Croydon and then Endeavour Hills. Finishing in second spot, we earned a place in the quarter finals and were matched against the number one team in the South Group …. an undefeated Moorabbin.

Batting first, the team did a great job in making 9/165 off 45 overs. An opening partnership of 54 between Patty Carroll (55) and Patrick Forrest (19) was exactly the start we needed. Some good middle order partnerships and some late hitting by Aidan Greenhalgh (15) and James Whitchurch (15*) meant that we finished up with a competitive total to defend.  After dismissing their main batsman for 57, the boys took regular wickets and dismissed Moorabbin for 119 in the 38th over.

Winning our way into the semi-finals, our next opponent was Taylors Lakes who finished on top in the West Group.

With heavy rain overnight and more in the morning, it looked unlikely that we would get a start. Fortunately the weather cleared allowing the covers to be taken off revealing a dry wicket ??. Taylors Lakes batted first and compiled 4/97 off their rain reduced 24 overs.  Skipper Henry Smith (1/15 off 5), Jack Lyndon (1/10 off 5), Pas DeSilva 1/21 off 5) and Patrick Romijn (1/15 off 3) were the pick of our bowlers.  In reply, Patrick Forrest got us off to a flyer scoring 25 off 30 balls in a 37 opening run stand. Ollie Horlock (32) then joined Patty Carroll (29) and the pair put on 46 for the second wicket. It was then left up to Henry Smith (3*) and Patrick Romijn (2*) to get the remaining runs in the 21st over.

Another great win by the boys.

This Sunday 26th January at 10AM, the Balwyn Tigers take on Bayswater for a chance to win and lift the J.G. Craig Shield.

We're playing at Bayswater Oval which is located on Bayswater Road in Bayswater. We’re hoping to have a marque setup for all Balwyn supporters to gather and cheer on the team.

Fitzy and I look forward to seeing you all on day. Game on!!
